Entry #7 - Fresh movie Analysis

    Hello, my fellow Lexinator's,

Earlier this week I was assigned to watch the movie, Fresh, a film by Ana Sofia Joanes. I was assigned to watch this by my English professor and it turns out that it actually is a pretty good movie. It was a very inspiring and heart whelming film. It opens up with a short summary of the problems and consequences of industrialized food production, then focuses primarily on the individuals who are creating new approaches to address environmental, health, and economic challenges throughout the food chain.

The main characters are farmers, thinkers, and business people across the nation who are at the forefront of re-inventing food production in America. With a strong commitment to sustainability, they are changing how farms are run, how the land is cared for, and how food is distributed. Their goal is to prove to viewers that their success demonstrates that a new pattern based on sustainable practices can be profitable and a model for our food system if people such as the viewers are convinced to support it.

Their targeted audience is anyone that does not know a lot about our food system. I know this because the film assumes that the audience does not know anything about this topic and provides a very detailed background of our food system. Throughout the rest of the movie it goes on to tell all the reasons why we need to change it because of how damaging it can be towards our society and economy. This says that the tone of this movie is serious/ informational, but also emotional and moving.

The topic of our farms, food production, and food distrubution is very serious and very important to learn about because we use the food system every single day, but it can also be very controversial to talk about. For instance, our food production is increasingly viewed as an unsustainable system, destructive to the enviornment and public health. According to the film, "we have had more than a hundred million tons of herbicide poured on our crops, polluting our air, in our foods." That's insanse to think about; we put those crops into our mouths every single day! I was fine with learning about our crops and our farming, but when it came to learning about animal cruelty it was very hard for me. The movie included graphic videos and images of farm animals being slaughtered and I absolutely hated it. It made me feel helpless and sympatheitc for those innocent animals being killed. I may even become vegan one day because I love animals and I could never kill one myself, and I also have tried vegan food before and it's actually not that bad. We need to find a better farming and food production because we need to treat our crops and food better, but we also need to treat our farm animals better.

Even though our food production may not be as good as it used to be, there are alternatives. For example, Joel Salatin is a world-famous sustainable farmer and entrepreneaur who, by observing nature, devised a rotational grazing system for his animals that heals the land while making his operations many times more profitable than his conventional farming neighbors. We can do our part by learning about this method and using it ourselves if we are farmers, and for us that are not farmers inform those that are.

Please watch this movie it is very inspiring and will motivate you to eat better and to support the new food production methods that are introduced. I hope you like the movie if you choose to watch it and I hope you learned a thing or 2 from this blog.

    Sincerely,

    Alexis Aguilar
